Kate Toledo, during her time in Brazil was inspired by the richness of the Baroque art found in Brazilian churches and sacred art museums. Her work is heavily influenced by the colors and shapes of the afro-roman-catholic syncretism commonly found in the Brazilian hinterland. It is easy to recognize in Kate’s earlier work the influence of the “Festa do Divino” images, the rococo splendors in rich textures of gold, the purple and royal blue of the saints, mixed with the red and ochre of the “figas” and chicken blood from the “candomblé.”

I think it's clear I have a little art envy when it comes to poster design. When done well, posters remind me of that moment in a book or story when you figure out what the title means. Much like good good trailers, a poster should let you know exactly what kind of film you're in for without giving away any plot. Good poster collections, such as this one, work as showcase for both the filmmaker and the designer's style. I also love it when posters only make sense once you've seen the film.

The Lady and the Reaper

In which a miracle working doctor is battling for the sould of an old woman who is ready to go peacefully into death in this colourful, energetic romp. The music in this one is fabulous, and the old lady remind me of grandmother willow in Pocahontas. 4:58 made me laugh out loud.

Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty

In which computer and hand drawn animation is used to tell the humorous story of an embittered grandmother relaying her own unsettling version of sleeping beauty to a terrified child. The writing in this is hysterical, and the little song during the end credits.

French Roast

In which an unfortunate cafe patron who has misplaced his wallet and is running up a huge tab in an attempt to stall. Visually, this is my favourite of the three, the matted hobo, the bulldog face, the waiter, the parisian decor, the decrepit mirror, i love the whole look. And I love the ending.

My first memory of Nefertiti was in this Michael Jackson video, played by the unbelievably fine Iman. Awkward wooing aside, it's one of MJs most underrated songs. And nothing in this life is as wonderfully Kitsch as his outfit.

Noone in the UK seems to watch the Oscars. I've looked forward to them every year since I was about 11, and I've maybe missed 1 or two since then. I'm not going to be obnoxious and discuss what I thought, funnily enough these posters say it all! Nothing on Tom Ford's 'A Single Man' though, which is a tale for another time, when I've stuck back together the pieces of a shattered heart that isn't even mine.
